DENTAL HYGIENE

Good dental hygiene is always important. As the hygienists I worked with when I was a dental assistant for 7 years always used to say, “You only have to brush the teeth you want to keep.”(And you should want to keep ALL of them as they all serve an important purpose!)

With tooth gems in particular, they can cause excessive plaque buildup on the teeth so it’s extra important to make sure you are keeping the teeth and surrounding area nice and clean. Be sure to, as usual, brush 2 – 3x daily AND floss 1x daily for best results.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES:

Much like when you have braces on your teeth during orthodontic treatment, there are certain foods and styles of eating that can be detrimental and cause your tooth gems to fall off more quickly. You should avoid eating corn on the cob, apples, etc — food that in the eating which put excess pressure on the tooth gems themselves. (Better to cut corn off the cob or cut your apple up instead!)

Otherwise, you can more or less forget your tooth gems is even there!

COUNTER-INDICATIONS:

Of course, some peoples’ anatomy don’t lend themselves well to certain designs so be sure to include photos in your intake estimate form. There is always SOMEthing that can be done, just be prepared to have a conversation about what it most appropriate based on your specific teeth, if necessary.

For clients with inflammed, puffy gums or periodontal disease tooth gems may be especially damaging. Tooth gem designs along the gum line are especially counter-indicated in these situations. The tooth gem technician may request that clients get a dental cleaning or visit the dentist prior to tooth gem placement in extreme cases.
